What is a Toilet Rough-In and How to Measure It? A Complete Guide for Your Smart Toilet Upgrade

What exactly is a "Rough-In"?

Simply put, the rough-in is the distance between the wall behind the toilet and the center of the waste pipe (drainage hole). Knowing your precise rough-in measurement is the most critical step before purchasing a BBbidet smart toilet. If you get this number wrong, your new toilet might not fit the space, or you could be left with an unsightly gap behind the tank.

How to Measure for Floor Drainage (S-Trap):

If your toilet flushes into the floor, you have an S-Trap. To measure the rough-in:

(1) Find the center of the bolts that hold your toilet to the floor.

(2) Measure from the finished wall directly behind the toilet to the center of those bolts.

 (3) Important: Measure from the wall tiles, not the baseboard, to ensure a perfect flush-to-wall fit. Common sizes are 12 inches (305mm) or 15 inches (400mm).

How to Measure for Wall Drainage (P-Trap):

If your waste pipe exits through the wall, you need to measure the height instead:

(1) Measure from the finished floor up to the center of the waste pipe exiting the wall.

 (2) In Hong Kong, "Low-level" outlets are typically around 100mm high,

while "High-level" outlets are around 180mm.

Identifying this height ensures your BBbidet connects smoothly to your home’s plumbing.
